What Does a Videographer Do? (and Do You Need One Alongside a Photographer?)

When people in Brisbane contact me about capturing their wedding, corporate event, or special occasion, the first question is usually about photography. The second is almost always:

“Do I need a videographer as well, or will photos be enough?”

The answer really depends on what you want to remember and how you want to relive it. That’s why I now offer both professional photography and videography, so you don’t have to choose.

What Does a Videographer Do?

A videographer records moving images and sound, then crafts them into a finished story. The process involves:

  • Camera operation & lighting – capturing high quality visuals and adjusting lighting to create cinematic shots.

  • Audio recording – using microphones and audio equipment to clearly capture vows, speeches, or presentations.

  • Visual storytelling – knowing what to film and how to bring those moments together.

  • Editing & post-production – cutting, colour grading, adding music and transitions to create a polished final product.

In short, videography is about capturing the motion, sound, and atmosphere of an event to complement the timeless stills from photography.

The Difference Between Photography and Videography

Photography and videography tell the same story in different ways:

  • Photography preserves moments you can frame, share, and revisit forever.

  • Videography adds sound and movement, letting you experience the energy and emotion as it unfolded.

For example, at a recent Brisbane wedding I covered, photography gave the couple stunning portraits and candid shots. The videography, however, let them hear their vows, the music during their first dance, and the laughter of their guests. Together, the two created a complete story.

Are Videographers Necessary?

Not every occasion requires video, but for many events it makes a world of difference:

  • Weddings – Videography captures vows, laughter, and music that photos alone can’t. Many couples tell me their wedding film became one of their most treasured keepsakes.

  • Corporate events – Businesses often need promotional videos or highlight reels for digital marketing. Event videography helps communicate your brand and engage your audience.

  • Special events – Anniversaries, birthdays, and milestone celebrations are richer with video, especially if speeches or performances are part of the day.

  • Headshots & portraits – For these, photography usually covers everything you need.

So, are videographers necessary? Not always. But if you want to relive the sounds, movement, and atmosphere (not just see the moment) videography is worth considering.

Can One Person Do Both?

This is a question I hear often: “Can one person handle both photography and videography?”

The short answer is: yes, when it’s done with planning and experience.

Because I provide both services, I work with couples and clients to understand what matters most. Sometimes I’ll focus heavily on photography and include videography as a highlight film. Other times, clients want a full video production alongside the photos. I tailor the balance to your needs.

If your event requires complete coverage of both at the same time, I bring in a trusted second shooter. That way, you’ll have the best of both worlds without compromise.

Why Photos and Videos Work Best Together

Photography and videography aren’t about choosing one or the other. Together, they create a more complete memory:

  • Photography gives you timeless images to hold, frame, and share.

  • Videography adds voices, music, and motion that bring those images to life.

At a recent corporate event in Brisbane, the photos were used for professional media and LinkedIn, while the video became a social media highlight reel. Both served different purposes, but together they told the full story.

How to Decide What’s Right for You

When planning your event, ask yourself:

  • What’s my goal? Do you want timeless images, a cinematic film, or both?

  • Who’s the audience? Are you sharing with family and friends, or using the content for marketing campaigns?

  • What’s my budget? Adding videography is an investment, but one that gives you a way to relive your event in full.

Capturing Your Story in Full

So, what does a videographer do? They capture high quality video and audio, transforming your event into a story you can hear, watch, and feel again.

As someone who provides both photography and videography in Brisbane, my role is to help you decide what balance is right for your day. Whether you want photos, video, or the complete package, I’ll make sure your story is told beautifully.
